Longhouse Vists: Please see general descriptions here and let us know of your preferences:
The longhouse visit included in some programs is Menyang Tais where you will actually stay in the longhouse as the chief's guest! You get a truly authentic feel for their lifestyle and are able to have a lot of interaction with the residents! It's an awesome experience, however, it's not that physically comfortable for westerners..
...You will sleep on thin mattresses on the living-room floor of the chief's "apartment" covered with mosquito netting & a fan. You will join the longhouse residents for all meals, which means sitting on the floor! During the day you'll be trekking and exploring the surrounding forest. The ground handler has built an "outhouse" with western plumbing for our guests.. a small room complete with flush toilet, tiny sink and shower head...but with very little 'turn-around' room.
Alternatively some programs include a visit to Nanga Sumpa longhouse which is much deeper into the jungle (& entails an amazing 1.5-2 hour boat ride through the forest.) You would only visit this longhouse after dinner. Your meals and lodging would be in our guest lodge which is definitely more comfortable than the longhouse. You would be in private rooms, with a fan & mosquito netting, and would also have western plumbing, but more similar to college dorm-type male/female bathrooms.. During the day you would be exploring the surrounding forest. This option is higher priced than the previous and due to the distance, is only available for trips of at least 2nights
To sum up: if you want more contact and interaction with the natives, you should spend one or two nights at Menyang Tais. If you want more physical comfort and more time traveling upriver deeper into the jungle, you should spend both nights at Nanga Sumpa, or one night at each.
